What we do
In my lab, we study all the "weird" things that humans do when making judgments and decisions, whether it is drawing upon the heaviness of a book to infer its value, leveraging the typical context of a word to infer the meaning of a new word, using a metaphor to determine your behavior, or using your last name to name your lab because you can't think of anything else. It turns out that these "weird" things are not so weird when you understand how humans think. This is why we study these things - our goal is to achieve a better understanding of how humans reason and how situations and contexts guide judgments.
Current lab members
Andrew Hall is a second-year Ph.D. candidate, originally from New Brunswick. His current research examines the effect that an impoverished information search has on reasoning about vaccines, the veracity of news headlines, and the impressions we make about the self and others. Other general interests includes the role of language in our ability to discern true and false information across a variety of media and issues in the replicability of psychological science. Outside of his work, Andrew is an amateur whiskey enthusiast and at-home Jeopardy champion. His CV can be found here.

Joanna Kraemer is a first-year M.Sc. student, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her research interests lie at the intersections of gender, language, perception, and prejudice. Outside of working hours, Joanna enjoys reading, spending time in nature (especially by a beach), and going for long walks with her dog, Ditto.

Michael Yue is a recent graduate who majored in life sciences, minored in psychology, and completed a certificate in law. He is currently assisting with research that explores the impact of metaphor use on how people understand different sexual phenomena. He aspires to pursue a career in paediatrics where he can apply his experiences in the life sciences, psychology, law, and ethics in an interdisciplinary fashion every day. Outside of the lab, Michael enjoys exploring other countries, trying new foods, watching films at the cinema, having breakfast at Tiffany’s, attending his favourite art museums repeatedly, dancing, and listening to Mariah Carey.

Madeline Mayers is a fourth-year Honours Thesis student from the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario. She is pursuing her BAH with a major in psychology and a minor in health studies. Her research interests lie in understanding how cognitive biases can affect decision making, how this intersects with aspects of clinical psychology, and how it can apply to real-world events such as COVID-19. Beyond her studies, Madeline can be found petting her adorable bunnies (Rex and Lola) if she is in her hometown, or looking at photos of Rex and Lola while she is away.
